Step-by-Step Guide to Renew Your Guard Card In 2025

✅ Step 1: Check Your Guard Card Expiration Date

The first step in renewing your California Guard Card is to check your expiration date.

You can:

  • Look at the printed expiration date on your card, or

  • Search your license number using the BSIS License Lookup Tool:

To renew your Guard Card, you must meet all BSIS training requirements under California Business and Professions Code (BPC) Sections 7583.6 and 7583.20.

Listed Below is a Direct Quote from the Official BSIS Security Guard Registration Renewal Application Front Page:

“Pursuant to BPC section 7583.20, you MUST HAVE COMPLETED, and you must certify that you have completed, all training required by section 7583.6, subdivision (b) as set out below as a condition for renewal.

Within 6 months of Initial Registration:

32 hours of security guard skills training must have been completed within six months of registration as detailed below:

1. At least 16 hours within 30 days of registration

2. Additional 16 hours (for a total of 32 hours) within 6 months of registration Pursuant to BPC Section 7583.6, subdivision (e), you must complete the following training.

Annual Training: 8 hours of security guard skills training must be completed annually”

(This annual training may be provided by your employer or an independent BSIS-approved training provider.)
