Course Description

This fully online Communication and its Significance course is approved by the California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) as part of the continuing education requirement for licensed security guards. This course covers the essential role communication plays in safety, coordination, and emergency response across a variety of security settings.

Students will learn internal and external communication protocols, including how to use radios, monitors, and other technologies, and how to properly contact first responders, government agencies, and other key personnel during routine operations and emergencies.


What You’ll Learn

  • How to follow internal communication protocols based on post orders and contracts

  • Proper use of communication tools such as radios, monitors, and surveillance systems

  • How and when to escalate communication to supervisors, dispatch, or management

  • Effective communication with external entities including:

    • Emergency medical responders

    • Police, sheriffs, and other law enforcement

    • Fire departments and city/government agencies

  • The importance of clear, concise, and timely communication during incidents


Course Requirements

  • Students must be at least 18 years old.

  • Students should have already completed the 8-hour BSIS Powers of Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force course (online and in-person) required for licensure as a security officer in California, or have plans to complete it soon.

  • This course can be paired with other 4-hour BSIS continued education courses to help meet the 32-hour continuing education requirement set by the state of California.
