How the Online Guard Card Training Process Works at National IPS (2026 Guide)

How the Online Guard Card Training Process Works at National IPS (2026 Guide)

One of the most common questions we hear from new applicants is a simple one: what actually happens after you enroll?

If you have never taken an online security course before, the process can feel uncertain, and the last thing you want is to enroll in training, get confused halfway through, and end up with a certificate BSIS will not accept.

This guide walks you through the exact step-by-step process of completing your California guard card training, from choosing the right course before you enroll, all the way to submitting your BSIS application and starting work.

No guesswork. No gaps.

Whether you are a new applicant getting your first guard card or a licensed officer completing continuation hours, this is exactly what to expect.

National IPS is a BSIS-approved training provider (Provider ID: ATG-2976). Every course listed in this guide meets California state requirements and produces a certificate accepted by BSIS for guard card applications, renewals, and continuing education.

Phase 1: Getting your first California guard card (new applicants)

If you have never held a California guard card, follow this path. Every step below is in order — do not skip ahead.

STEP 1. Go to NationalIPS.com and Choose Your Course

Head to nationalips.com and navigate to the California guard card training section. For first-time applicants, you have two options:

  • Initial Security Officer Course — covers the required 8-hour Powers to Arrest training. Start here if you want to get your application moving immediately and complete the remaining 32 hours separately once you are working.
  • Full 40-Hour Security Officer Training Package — covers all 40 hours of required BSIS training in one enrollment. This is the better value if you want to satisfy your complete first-year requirement upfront.

Both are hybrid courses. If you are unsure which to pick, call a National IPS live advisor at (302)-556-7446 — they will tell you exactly which course fits your situation in under five minutes.

STEP 2 Create Your Account and Enroll

Click “Add to Cart” on your chosen course and proceed to checkout. You will be prompted to create a National IPS student account using your email address. This account is where all your course materials, progress, and certificates are stored.

Payment options at checkout include:

  • Credit or debit card, pay in full at enrollment
  • Affirm, Klarna, or Afterpay, pay in flexible monthly installments with no delay to course access

Once payment is confirmed, you will receive an email confirmation and immediate access to your course dashboard. There is no waiting period, you can start your online modules within minutes of enrolling.

STEP 3 Complete Your Online Theory Modules

Log in to your National IPS student dashboard and begin your online coursework. The online portion of your hybrid course covers all the theory and knowledge-based content required by BSIS, including:

  • Powers to Arrest and appropriate use of force
  • Terrorism awareness and emergency response
  • Workplace violence prevention
  • Legal responsibilities of a California security officer
  • Ethical conduct and professional standards

The modules are delivered through on-demand video lessons. You can pause, rewind, and replay any lesson as many times as you need. There is no time limit on how quickly or slowly you move through the content, study at your own pace, on your own schedule, from any device.

Each module ends with a knowledge check or quiz. You must complete and pass these assessments to progress through the course and unlock your certificate. If you have questions during the online portion, use the built-in live chat feature to reach your instructor in real time. Optional Zoom review sessions are also available.

STEP 4 Schedule and Attend Our In-Person Session

This is the step that sets hybrid training apart from fully online courses, and it is required by BSIS for all first-time guard card applicants. Once you have completed the online modules, you will schedule your in-person session directly through your course dashboard.

The in-person session covers the hands-on components required by BSIS for new applicant certification. Arrive on time, bring a valid photo ID, and plan for the full scheduled duration. Once completed, your attendance is recorded in the system.

STEP 5 Download Your Certificate of Completion

Once you have completed all online modules, passed your assessments, and attended your in-person session, your BSIS-compliant certificate of completion is generated automatically. You can download it immediately from your student dashboard — no waiting, no processing delay.

Your certificate will display:

  • Your full name
  • The course name and BSIS-required subject areas covered
  • Total training hours completed
  • National IPS provider information and BSIS Provider ID: ATG-2976
  • Date of completion

Keep a digital and printed copy. You will need this certificate when submitting your guard card application to BSIS.

STEP 6 Submit Your BSIS Guard Card Application

With your certificate in hand, you are ready to apply for your California guard card through BSIS. The application is submitted online at bsis.ca.gov. Here is what the application requires:

  • Completed BSIS guard card application form
  • Your certificate of completion from National IPS
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • BSIS application fee payment

Once BSIS processes your application and background check, your guard card will be issued. Processing times vary, check the current BSIS processing timeline on bsis.ca.gov for the most up-to-date information.

STEP 7 Start Working and Complete Your Continuation Training

Once your guard card is approved, you can legally begin working as a security officer in California. However, your training obligations do not stop here. BSIS requires:

  • 16 of your 32 continuation hours must be completed within your first 30 days of employment
  • The remaining 16 continuation hours must be completed within your first 6 months of employment

If you enrolled in the Full 40-Hour Package, your continuation hours are already included and you can begin working through them online immediately. If you enrolled in the Initial 8-Hour Course only, you will need to enroll in the 32-Hour Security Officer Continuation Package ($99) separately. This course is fully online, no in-person session required, and can be completed entirely at your own pace between shifts.

Phase 2: For Licensed Guards, Continuation and Renewal

If you already hold a valid California guard card, the process is simpler and fully online. No in-person session is required for any of these courses.

STEP 1 Identify Which Course You Need

Licensed guards have two fully online course paths at National IPS:

STEP 2 Enroll and Access Your Course Immediately

Go to nationalips.com, select your course, and complete the checkout. The same flexible payment options apply — credit card, Affirm, Klarna, or Afterpay. You get instant access to all course materials the moment your enrollment is confirmed.

STEP 3 Complete All Modules Fully Online

Work through all video lessons and knowledge checks at your own pace — from your phone, tablet, or computer. There is no fixed schedule, no commute, and no in-person requirement. The Renewal/Refresher course has 23 lessons across 8 hours. The 32-Hour Continuation Package is structured across 8 bundled courses totalling 32 hours. The Supervisor Certification covers 2 modules across 4 hours.

STEP 4 Download Your Certificate Instantly

As soon as you complete the final module and pass all assessments, your certificate is available for immediate download. For renewal courses, submit this certificate to BSIS through the bsis.ca.gov portal to keep your guard card active.

What to expect from the National IPS learning platform

If you have never taken an online course before, here is what the National IPS platform actually looks and feels like so you know what to expect before you start.

On-demand video lessons

All course content is delivered through pre-recorded video modules. You control the pace — pause, rewind, or re-watch any lesson at any time. There is no live streaming requirement and no fixed class time.

Knowledge checks and module quizzes

After each lesson or module, you will complete a short quiz or knowledge check. These exist to verify your understanding of the material and are required by BSIS. You cannot skip them. If you do not pass a quiz, you can attempt it again.

Built-in live instructor chat

Every National IPS course includes live instructor interaction through a built-in chat feature. If you have a question about course content, whether it is about California law, BSIS requirements, or a specific scenario, you can ask your instructor directly and receive a real response.

Works on any device

The platform is fully mobile-friendly. You can complete your online modules on a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer, whatever is most convenient for your schedule.

Instant certificate download

The moment you complete your final assessment, your certificate is generated automatically and available for download from your student dashboard. No waiting, no emailing to request it.

Worry-Free Guarantee

All National IPS courses are covered by a Worry-Free Guarantee. If you are not 100% satisfied within 72 hours of purchase and have not completed all lessons, you receive a full refund, no questions asked. Terms apply.

Common mistakes to avoid during the training process

  • Enrolling in a fully online course as a first-time applicant, new applicants need a hybrid course. Fully online courses will not satisfy the BSIS in-person requirement for a new guard card.
  • Missing the 30-day deadline for continuation hours, BSIS requires 16 of your 32 continuation hours to be completed within your first 30 days of employment. Plan ahead.
  • Not keeping a copy of your certificate, always download and save both a digital and printed copy of every certificate you earn. BSIS requires these for applications and renewals.
  • Using a non-BSIS-approved provider, always verify provider status on bsis.ca.gov before enrolling in any course. Certificates from unapproved providers will be rejected.
  • Letting your guard card expire, renew before expiration using the Renewal/Refresher course. Reactivating an expired card has additional requirements and costs.
