Course Description

This Workplace Violence Prevention course is designed to educate employees and security professionals on recognizing, preventing, and responding to workplace violence in alignment with California BSIS regulations. The course also introduces participants to Senate Bill 553 (SB 553) and applicable Cal/OSHA workplace safety expectations.

The training covers the identification of warning signs, de-escalation techniques, personal security strategies, and proper reporting procedures. Special emphasis is placed on understanding how workplace violence can arise across various professional relationships, including employee-to-employee, customer and client interactions, and supervisory environments.

This fully online course provides an overview of the purpose and key requirements of SB 553, including employer responsibilities, employee rights, and the importance of early intervention. Participants are also introduced to BSIS incident reporting requirements and prevention principles. By the end of the course, students will have a stronger understanding of how to help maintain a safer, more respectful, and legally compliant workplace.

Course Requirements

  • Students must be at least 18 years old

  • No prior security experience required

  • This course may be used as part of broader workplace safety or security training programs

    • Students should have already completed the 8-hour BSIS Powers of Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force course (online and in-person) required for licensure as a security officer in California, or have plans to complete it soon.

    • This course can be paired with seven other 4-hour BSIS continued education courses to help meet the 32-hour continuing education requirement set by the state of California.

NOTE: A security guard registrant who is unable to provide their employing PPO the certificates of satisfactory completion of the security officer skills training shall complete 16 hours of the training within 30 days of the registrant’s employment date and shall complete the 16 remaining hours within six months of the registrant’s employment date.

Workplace Violence Training Curriculum (4 Hours BSIS Continued Education Credit)
This comprehensive 4-hour curriculum equips Security Officers with the tactical and legal skills to prevent workplace violence. Aligned with California Senate Bill 553, the course covers the four legal types of violence, "left-of-bang" threat detection, verbal de-escalation strategies, and mandatory incident reporting. Officers will learn to identify pre-incident indicators, manage aggressive behavior, and execute legally defensible documentation.
