How to Renew or Replace an Expired California Guard Card

Oh No! Your Guard Card Expired? Don’t Panic—Here’s How to Get It Back in California!

It happens to the best of us—you glance at your Guard Card and suddenly realize it has expired! Maybe you took a break from security work, or life just got busy. Either way, there’s no need to panic. Your security career isn’t over! In fact, regaining a California Guard Card is easier than you might think (and way less stressful than trying to reset a Netflix password).

This guide will walk you through the steps on how to renew or replace your California Guard Card, explain which BSIS-approved courses are required, and how The National Institute of Public Safety (National IPS) makes the process fast, affordable, and stress-free.

First Things First: What BSIS Says About Expired Guard Cards

The Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) regulates all security guard licenses in California. BSIS has different rules depending on how long your Guard Card has been expired. If it’s been less than 60 days, renewal is simpler and may not require restarting. For Guard Cards expired more than 60 days, a new application and full training are required to get back in compliance. let’s Break Down How It Works:

✅If Your Guard Card Expired Less Than 60 Days After The Renewal Date

Good news—you’re still in the safe zone! You can renew without starting over. Here’s what to do:

  • First, Complete the 8 Hours of Security Officer Renewal/Refresher Training

  • Next, Submit your renewal online via the BSIS BreEZe Portal or by mail using the BSIS Renewal Application PDF

  • finally, Pay the $40 renewal fee plus a $25 late fee
