Want to Become a Security Officer in your state?
To become a licensed unarmed security guard in Arizona, you need to meet the following basic eligibility criteria:
Age: At least 18 years old
Citizenship: U.S. citizen or legal resident authorized to work in the U.S.
Residency: Must reside in Arizona
Background: Must have a clean criminal record, with no disqualifying convictions (such as felonies or certain misdemeanors).
Before applying for your security guard license, you must complete the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS)-approved 8-hour Unarmed Security Officer Certification Course. This training covers key topics:
Duties and responsibilities of security guards
Communication protocols
Use of force and emergency response
Interaction with law enforcement
At the National Institute of Public Safety (National IPS), we offer this certification online, allowing you to complete the training on your schedule.
Once you complete the required training, the next step is to submit your application to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS). Here’s what you’ll need:
Letter of Hire: A letter from a licensed Arizona security company confirming that you’ve been hired.
Fingerprinting: You must submit your fingerprints for a background check to AZDPS.
Passport Photo: Upload a recent headshot.
Completed Application: Submit your application online to AZDPS along with your training certificate.
The AZDPS will conduct a criminal background check using your fingerprints. You must pass this background check to proceed with the licensing process. AZDPS will not approve applicants with disqualifying convictions such as felonies or certain misdemeanor offenses.
Once your application is approved and your background check is clear, AZDPS will issue your unarmed security guard license (Guard Card). This license is valid for two years and allows you to work legally as an unarmed security guard in Arizona.
Continued Education: To renew your license every two years, you must complete an 8-hour refresher course from an approved training provider.
Processing Time: After submitting your application, expect processing times to take several weeks. Your Guard Card will be mailed to you once approved.
