How To Become a Licensed Security Officer in Utah

How To Become a Licensed Security Officer in Utah

1. Meet Basic Eligibility Requirements

Before applying for a security guard license in California, you must meet the following basic eligibility requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  • Have a clean criminal background (no disqualifying convictions, such as felonies or certain misdemeanors)

2. Complete the Required Training

Before applying for a security guard license in California, you must meet the following basic eligibility requirements:

  • The 3-Hour Power to Arrest Course and 5-Hour Appropriate Use of Force Training Course: These foundational courses cover topics such as the legal powers and responsibilities of security guards, how to handle arrests, appropriate uses of force, and understanding the role of law enforcement.
  • The 32-Hour Guard Card Training: This course covers the basics of security procedures, emergency procedures, ethics, and communication skills. It prepares candidates for a wide range of situations they may encounter while on duty.

3. Submit Your Application

Once you’ve completed the required training, you must submit your application to BSIS. This involves:

  • Completing the Security Guard Application form
  • Submitting fingerprints for a background check to be processed by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the FBI
  • Paying the application fee

4. Pass the Background Check

As part of the application process, a thorough background check will be conducted, which includes checking criminal records both locally and nationally. If you have a criminal history, certain convictions may disqualify you from obtaining a security guard license.

5. Receive Your Guard Card

Upon approval from BSIS, you will receive your Guard Card, your official license to work as a security guard in California. This card is valid for two years, after which you must renew it.

6. Additional Requirements

  • Renewal: To keep your security guard license active, you need to complete additional training every two years. This includes the 8-hour refresher course and any other courses specified by BSIS.
  • Specialized Training: Depending on your area of work, you may need additional certifications, such as for carrying a firearm or using a baton.
